Memphis native and educator, Tami Sawyer is determined to have two Confederate monuments removed from public spaces in the city. Sawyer, director of diversity and cultural competence for Teach for America, wants to ensure that the people of the city are empowered and see themselves as people and not relics of a time past.
“Jefferson Davis is known to have said that it is the duty of the white Christian man to own black people because they are unintelligent. So, why is it important for me? It’s because a man that told me that I was dumb and needed to be picking his cotton can’t stand in my city. My nieces can’t come up under that shadow.”
